Reeve's Message
Smoky Lake County accomplished
several milestones on the legislative front in 2012.
These milestones include the passing of Smoky Lake County’s Strategic
Plan and the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and the Land Use Bylaw (LUB).
These are just three of the key planning documents that guide the long
term management of our County resources and infrastructure. A great deal
of thought and public input went into each of them, and we thank those
who participated over the long road that brought these plans into being.
Government work is never as simple as collecting taxes and spending the
money. The public deserves to know that great effort is made to ensure
that we do things with longer term plans and management in mind. With
increasing development in our County, the demands on our resources are
also increasing, so these plans are very timely.
Council has also set forth the intent that these are “living documents”
that do not simply sit on a shelf. Ongoing monitoring of the goals of
the Strategic Plan has been established so that when the plan is
renewed, the County can move the plan forward with an eye on where we’ve
been, and the MDP and LUB are similarly monitored and open to revisions
as needed to accommodate new realities.
As we look ahead to 2013, the last year of this political term, we are
aware that the political ground will shift somewhat in the municipal
world. Following the municipal elections in October of 2013, elected
Councilors will serve a four year term, which is a change that the
province has committed to after many years of debate and discussion with
Alberta municipalities.
I want to thank my Council colleagues and the Administration and Staff
of the County for all of their hard work on behalf of the citizens of
this great municipality, and say that it has been an honor to serve as
your Chief Elected Official in this past term. I look forward to seeing
more County progress in the years to come!
Respectfully submitted,
Dareld Cholak, Reeve
