CAO'S REPORT

2010 was an interesting and challenging year. This pretty much goes without saying.  Every year is interesting and challenging in the municipal world.

Every year the weather presents challenges for municipal service providers.  Every year the ground shifts somewhat under the grant regime that helps sustain our operations and support our budget. Every year we drive toward excellence in municipal governance, for efficiency and effectiveness, and all in an atmosphere of financial uncertainty and mounting expectations.

What we seek is stability and certainty in a world full of uncertainty.

And we deliver. From snowplowing to development, from waste handling to utilities, our local government services are a very stable influence in our daily lives. Certainly there come occasional “hiccups” in the system, “bumps in the road” (if you’ll forgive the obvious pun); but by-and large few people would argue about the overall stability of municipal government and municipal government services.

I would like to thank the management and staff of Smoky Lake County for their dedicated and professional service. We have an excellent complement of civil servants who see themselves in the true spirit of that term, and I am very proud to work with them all.

As you are likely aware, Smoky Lake County is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2011.  This is an exciting point in our history and I am sure that our celebrations will pay tribute to the rich and exciting path that has brought us to the present day.  Rural communities in Canada and Alberta have undergone radical changes in the last two generations, and we owe it to ourselves to reflect on that past so that we can acknowledge our present and prepare for our future.

Respectfully,

Cory Ollikka
