Smoky Lake County Emergency Services had another busy year in 2016 with the Fire Departments responding to 232 calls which is up 10 calls for 2015. The Fire Departments are working with the RCMP and Victim Services on the Dare and Party Program for the High School kids. The Fire Departments have executed an agreement with Alberta Health Services to enter into the Medical First Responders Program which allow members to provide medical treatments before an ambulance arrives on scene.
Smoky Lake County Emergency Services training has changed in 2016 with the Fire Commissioner’s Office eliminating the 12 S – series course to become a professional firefighter and created a level 1 – Basic Firefighter and level 2 – Advanced Firefighter, which is recognized across North America. Seven members are currently training to complete the Level 1 – Basic Firefighter and more members will be starting in 2017. Members completed Incident Command System 200 and 300 training. As well, recertification in CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator and First Aid. With Mental Health awareness becoming more prevalent, members completed Mental Health First Aid and Psychological First Aid. The Fire Department members are dedicated to complete training, as the departments are averaging more than a call every second day.
