Safety Tips

Partners in Safety” means working together to ensure your safety around our natural gas lines and at home.  From one partner to another, here are a few safety tips related to natural gas inside and outside of your home:

AT HOME

If you detect a strong gas smell indoors:

Call Smoky Lake County Natural Gas Department at 780 656-3037

AROUND OUR PIPELINE SYSTEM

Know the Warning Signs

Leaks rarely occur on our system.  However, there are some signs that may indicate a possible gas leak:

What you may see – an area of dead vegetation, a build-up of frost on the ground and / or bubbles appearing in free-standing water.

What you may hear – a loud whistling sound.

What you may smell – you may smell a skunk like smell.

If You Suspect a Leak:
Call Smoky Lake County Natural Gas Department at 656-3037

Natural Gas Chairperson's Message

2009 was a successful year for our municipally-owned gas utility.

Our Natural Gas department began implementing the recommendations from the 2008 Campbell Rider Engineering assessment of our gas system, and the viability and sustainability of our gas system has been improved dramatically.

Our year was completed on budget including $282,183 put into reserves for line replacement and capital repairs which are increasingly necessary to our ageing gas infrastructure. We have worked hard to keep gas loss to the acceptable provincial average of 2% per year. We thank those who reported the smell of natural gas and reported these potential leaks to County gas staff for investigation (and possible reward of $100 for a verified underground leak as per our policy). The public’s assistance has been a valuable tool in keeping our gas loss to a minimum.

I will continue to be your Zone Director for the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops. The Federation Board consists of nine representatives from throughout Alberta; however, the Federation is pursuing a restructuring that will likely see the number of Directors reduced to eight for efficiency and effectiveness reasons.

Smoky Lake County continues to work in partnership with the Federation and through Corridor Communications Inc. (which was created by Smoky Lake County and several Alberta Gas Co-ops) in planning wireless internet and automatic meter reading services for our residents and gas service.

We have also been pursuing an aggressive training schedule for our gas service personnel which is a mixed blessing as we balance staff absence with the need for highly trained and certified technicians. This has been done successfully despite an increased workload due to an ambitious meter replacement program in the past year.

Smoky Lake County Natural Gas Department continues to strive to provide the best possible prices and service to you - the consumer.

Dareld Cholak
Natural Gas Chairperson

Natural Gas Manager’s Message

This past year has been a busy one.  It has been a pleasure serving our customers and working with all County staff.

Besides working a regular work schedule, the Department will continue to invest time into training so that we may be able to serve our customers better.

In 2009, the Department repaired a few underground leaks found by staff, hired line walkers and two public reports.  Thank you for your assistance.

Please remember, if you are planning to have a natural gas service installed in 2010, apply early so that we can schedule your installation.

Effective January 1, 2010 the Gas Service
