Public Works Manager Report

Smoky Lake Public Works Department had a very challenging 2009 with the very dry conditions throughout the summer. The maintenance crew had the difficult task of keeping the roads free of washboard conditions and for the most part, kept the problem to a minimum.

As in 2008, Public Works is continuing with the clearing of the intersections for better site lines, which provide for safer driving conditions. The Hydro-Axe Program for clearing right-of-ways will change in 2010, having a full-time crew working throughout the year, with the exception of where excessive snow amounts prohibit further clearing.

We will continue to provide dust control on heavily traveled roads with either oil, treatment or MG-30. As well, Smoky Lake County continues to provide private dust control at a cost outlined further in this booklet.  The charts following will outline the 2010 scheduled projects.

Our maintenance and culvert crews are gaining ground on the various drainage problems throughout the County. I am confident if we continue with this Program, the County will be able to minimize future flooding and wash-outs.

We are continuing with our Rock Excavation Program as well as the annual Gravel Crushing at White Earth Pit.

Once again, thanks to the County Ratepayers for their patience during last year’s time of drought. Our very capable staff continues to strive to provide the best service possible to enable safe and comfortable travel throughout the year.
