Natural Gas Rebate Program

Natural Gas Rebate Program

The Government of Alberta has created the Natural Gas Rebate Program to provide price protection from spikes in natural gas costs for Albertans this winter.

Beginning October 1, 2022 to March 2023, eligible Albertans will see a rebate applied directly to their utility bill if the conditions of the rebate are met.

The exact rebate amount that Albertans will receive depends on the default natural gas rate each month.

If the monthly default natural rate from any of the regulated utility providers goes above $6.50 per gigajoule (GJ), rebates will be issued to eligible consumers covering the difference between $6.50 and the regulated rate on a consumption basis. For example, if the highest regulated rate is $7.50, eligible consumers would get a rebate of $1 for every gigajoule used in that month.

You do not need to apply for the rebate. It is automatically issued if you are a natural gas consumer who is connected to the system, is on either a regulated or competitive plan and uses less than 2,500 GJ of natural gas annually.
