Position Objectives:

Department: Environmental Operations

Employment Status: Seasonal | Full-Time | Non-Union

Smoky Lake County is seeking motivated students to join the Environment and Parks Department as Parks and Recreation Workers through the Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Reporting to the Environment and Parks Manager, successful candidates will perform general maintenance duties at parks, lakes, and outdoor facilities, operate small equipment, and assist with County-supported events. This position is ideal for high-school or post secondary students aged 16 and older who enjoy working outdoors and in a team-oriented environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate lawn mowers, grass cutting/hedge trimming machinery, power tools, equipment and other specialized seasonal maintenance equipment assigned by Management in accordance with County policies.
  • Move supplies, picnic tables and equipment as directed.
  • Clean washrooms, vault toilets, and other public use areas.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage and litter.
  • Assist with setup, tear-down and the operation of special events and functions.

  • Support seasonal operations (e.g., trail clearing, equipment cleaning, signage installation, dock installation)
  • Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Perform other related duties as directed.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 16 years
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or ability to obtain, depending on role requirements)
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating small equipment or performing maintenance work
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform repetitive tasks
  • Previous experience in parks, recreation, or facility maintenance

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors at parks, lakes, and County facilities
  • Exposure to weather, uneven terrain, and equipment operation
  • Schedule may include weekends, evenings, and variable hours
  • Position involves physical labour, including lifting, walking, and equipment operation
