Smoky Lake County is seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join the Agricultural Services Department as a Weed Inspector. Reporting to the Agricultural Fieldman, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting weed inspections, assisting with vegetation control, and supporting seasonal agricultural programs. This position is well-suited for someone with an interest in agriculture, pest management, and working outdoors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct weed inspections on private land
  • Perform roadside and spot spraying of weeds
  • Work collaboratively with producers to control noxious weeds
  • Conduct insect and crop disease surveys
  • Perform general maintenance and equipment upkeep
  • Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • Ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License or Authorized Assistant Applicator License
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment


Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

  • Pesticide Applicator License or Authorized Assistant Applicator License
  • Experience in agriculture, pesticide application, or spray operations
  • Knowledge of weed and plant identification
  • Familiarity with modern agricultural production practices

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors
  • Exposure to weather conditions, chemicals, and uneven terrain
  • Schedule may include extended or flexible hours during peak season
  • Position involves physical labour including walking, lifting, and operating equipment
