Edmonton Metro Region National Urban Park (NUP) Initiative

The National Urban Park Program

Edmonton is one of several cities across Canada in discussion with Parks Canada about the potential for establishing a National Urban Park in our city.

At this time, no site for a National Urban Park in Edmonton has been selected, and Edmonton is under no obligation to establish the park. We are at the start of discussing what a National Urban Park might look like in our city.

Before the City makes a decision on the creation of a National Urban Park in Edmonton, technical work and community engagement will be completed. Engagement and technical work will also determine the potential location of the National Urban Park and consider park design, programming, and management.

Starting this spring 2022, the City will begin technical assessments and engagement with partners and stakeholders, Indigenous Nations and communities, and other groups about this initiative. This work will help the City identify a potential site for the park, evaluate the potential benefits and challenges of a National Urban Park in Edmonton, and understand various perspectives on what such a park could look like.

The decision about whether a National Urban Park is established in Edmonton will be made by City Council using feedback provided by Edmontonians.
