Position Objectives:

Smoky Lake County is seeking an experienced individual to join our Public Works Department as an Operator IV (Truck Driver). Reporting to the Public Works Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating heavy equipment, including tractor-trailers and snow plow/sand trucks. This position is well-suited for a dependable and safety-conscious individual who enjoys working in a municipal operations environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate tractor-trailers equipped with air brake systems
  • Operate snow plow and sanding trucks equipped with air brake systems
  • Perform equipment inspections and basic maintenance activities
  • Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Class 1 Driver’s License with an acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience operating heavy equipment
  • Basic mechanical skills and working knowledge of heavy equipment
  • Willingness to complete mandatory training as required by Smoky Lake County
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment


Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

  • Experience operating additional pieces of municipal heavy equipment.
  • Previous experience working with a municipal operations (or public works) environment.

Working Conditions

  • Typical working hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on operational needs
  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Schedule may include extended hours during peak operational periods (e.g., construction season, snow events)
  • Exposure to seasonal weather, road conditions, dust, noise, and equipment vibration
  • Position involves physical labour, equipment operation, lifting, climbing, and prolonged periods of sitting while operating equipment

Compensation and Hours

  • Hours of Work: 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)
  • Work Location: Smoky Lake County Public Works Shop (5004 50 St, Smoky Lake, Alberta)
  • Wage/Benefits: In accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955 Collective Agreement
