Smoky Lake County Declares Agricultural Disaster

DECLARATION OF A MUNICIPAL AGRICULTURAL DISASTER

At a Special Council Meeting held on August 11, 2026, Smoky Lake County Council unanimously voted to declare a Municipal Agricultural Disaster in response to the ongoing excess moisture and extremely saturated conditions impacting the region.

A municipal declaration does not automatically provide financial assistance to producers or create a relief program. Rather, it is intended to formally recognize the significant challenges local agricultural producers are experiencing and are expected to continue facing in the weeks and months ahead.

The declaration also emphasizes the vital role agriculture plays in Smoky Lake County, Alberta and the broader Canadian and global food supply chain.

As part of the declaration, Smoky Lake County will send letters to the Provincial Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation and the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food outlining the current conditions and advocating for support and assistance for the local agricultural community.
