Smoky Lake County is seeking a motivated Summer Student to join our Public Works Department as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Helper. This is an excellent opportunity for a student seeking hands-on experience in the field of heavy equipment maintenance, working directly under the supervision of experienced professionals. This 8-week term position is ideal for students who are returning to post-secondary education in the fall of 2025.
Position Summary: Reporting to the Public Works Manager the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Helper is a valuable member of the Public Works department that will assist in the maintenance, servicing and repair of County vehicles and heavy equipment and shop maintenance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assisting mechanics with maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment.
- Performing shop clean-up and tool organization.
- Running parts and supplies as directed.
- Supporting general shop operations and tasks as required.
- Participating in safety and training activities.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be returning to full-time post-secondary education in the fall of 2025
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean Driver’s Abstract
- Strong interest in mechanics or equipment maintenance
- Ability to take direction and work in a team setting
- Physically able to perform manual labor and lift equipment parts
- Punctual, dependable, and safety-conscious
