Smoky Lake County is seeking an experienced, reliable, and safety-focused individual to join our Public Works
Department as an Equipment Operator III. Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the successful candidate
will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to support municipal road maintenance,
construction, and seasonal operations. This position is well-suited for someone with strong technical skills, a
commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operate a variety of heavy equipment including backhoe, grader, hydro axe, rock truck, heavy loader, and reclaimer
- Operate tandem axle trucks and waste management trucks
- Operate self-propelled and tractor-assisted compaction equipment
- Operate a steam truck and tractor for snow plowing
- Perform chainsaw operation, as required
- Conduct basic equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns
- Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
- Assist with other Public Works duties and operate additional equipment, as required
- Participate in required training and follow all operational procedures
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
Required Qualifications
- Valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum Class 3) with a clean Driver’s Abstract
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience operating heavy equipment
- Basic mechanical skills and working knowledge of heavy equipment • Willingness to participate in mandatory training, as required by the County
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to policies and procedures
- Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment
Preferred Qualifications (Assets)
- Ability to operate additional equipment (e.g., CAT equipment)
- Experience in municipal road maintenance and construction operations
- High school diploma
Working Conditions
- Typical working hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on operational needs
- Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Schedule may include extended hours during peak operational periods (e.g., construction season, snow events)
- This position involves prolonged sitting, equipment operation, and exposure to vibration and noise
Compensation and Hours
- Hours of Work: 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)
- Work Location: Smoky Lake County Public Works Shop (5004 50 St, Smoky Lake, Alberta)
- Wage/Benefits: In accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955
