Position Objectives:

Employment Status: Permanent Full-Time (Unionized – IUOE Local 955)

Smoky Lake County is seeking an experienced, reliable, and safety-focused individual to join our Public Works Department as an Equipment Operator III. Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment to support municipal road maintenance, construction, and seasonal operations. This position is well-suited for someone with strong technical skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment including backhoe, grader, hydro axe, rock truck, heavy loader, and reclaimer
  • Operate tandem axle trucks and waste management trucks
  • Operate self-propelled and tractor-assisted compaction equipment
  • Operate a steam truck and tractor for snow plowing
  • Perform chainsaw operation, as required
  • Conduct basic equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns
  • Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements
  • Assist with other Public Works duties and operate additional equipment, as required
  • Participate in required training and follow all operational procedures
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum Class 3) with a clean Driver’s Abstract
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience operating heavy equipment
  • Basic mechanical skills and working knowledge of heavy equipment • Willingness to participate in mandatory training, as required by the County
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to policies and procedures
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment


Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

  • Ability to operate additional equipment (e.g., CAT equipment)
  • Experience in municipal road maintenance and construction operations
  • High school diploma

Working Conditions

  • Typical working hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on operational needs
  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Schedule may include extended hours during peak operational periods (e.g., construction season, snow events)
  • This position involves prolonged sitting, equipment operation, and exposure to vibration and noise

  • Work Location: Smoky Lake County Public Works Shop (5004 50 St, Smoky Lake, Alberta)
