Position Objectives:
Smoky Lake County is seeking a reliable,
detail-oriented individual to join our Public Works Department as a Full-Time,
Permanent Shop Clerk I within the International Union of Operating
Engineers (IUOE) Local 955. This position works a regular schedule of 7:30
a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, and provides administrative and
clerical support to the Public Works team, with a primary focus on scale
operations, data entry, and records management related to the County’s gravel
haul program and Public Works Shop.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Operate scale systems to accurately weigh incoming and outgoing loads of gravel, sand, and other materials
· Ensure compliance with weight regulations, County policies, and load limits
· Maintain accurate records of material types, weights, and daily transactions
· Communicate effectively with truck drivers and Public Works staff regarding load pickups, deliveries, and instructions
· Prepare daily transaction reports, inventory records, and related documentation
· Perform routine scale checks and basic maintenance to ensure proper operation
· Provide administrative support to the Public Works Department, including answering phones, responding to emails, and handling inquiries from residents, contractors, and other departments
· Accurately enter and maintain data in spreadsheets, databases, and tracking systems related to work orders, materials, and inventory
· Organize, file, and archive electronic and paper records in accordance with County record retention policies
· Maintain a well‑organized filing system for efficient document retrieval
· Participate in annual safety meetings and complete required training

Perform other duties as assigned by the
Shop Clerk II, Shop Foreman, or Public Works Manager
Minimum Requirements:
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
· Previous administrative or clerical experience is preferred
· Experience operating scales or working in a public works, construction, or shop environment is considered an asset
· Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
· Effective verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a busy operational environment
· Strong customer service skills when interacting with staff, contractors, and the public
· Ability to work effectively as part of a team
·
Willingness to adapt to changing
priorities and work conditions
Benefits:
This position offers a wage based on the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955, Collective Agreement with Smoky Lake County.
