Equipment Operator IV (Grader)

Employment Status: Temporary Full-Time (Unionized – IUOE Local 955)

Smoky Lake County is seeking an experienced, reliable, and safety-focused individual to join our Public Works Department as a Temporary Operator IV (Grader). Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure, the successful candidate will be responsible for operating grader equipment to support municipal road maintenance and construction activities. This position is well-suited for someone with strong technical skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

• Operate grader equipment for road maintenance, construction, and seasonal operations (e.g., snow removal, grading).

• Perform basic equipment inspections and report maintenance concerns.

• Maintain safe working conditions in accordance with County policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

• Assist with other Public Works duties and operate additional equipment, as required.

• Complete required documentation and participate in mandatory training.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Valid Alberta Driver’s License (minimum Class 3; Class 1 preferred) with a clean Driver’s Abstract

• Minimum two (2) years’ experience operating heavy equipment, specifically graders.

• Basic mechanical skills and working knowledge of heavy equipment.

• Willingness to participate in mandatory training, as required by the County.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Strong commitment to safety and adherence to policies and procedures.

• Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications (Assets)

• Experience operating additional pieces of equipment.

• Knowledge of municipal road maintenance practices.

• High school diploma
  
  

Working Conditions

• Typical working hours are approximately 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on operational needs

• Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions

• Schedule may include extended hours during peak operational periods (e.g., construction season, snow events)

• This position involves prolonged sitting, equipment operation, and exposure to vibration and noise

Compensation and Hours

• Hours of Work: 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday (40 hours per week)

• Work Location: Smoky Lake County Public Works Shop (5004 50 St, Smoky Lake, Alberta)

• Wage/Benefits: In accordance with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 955 Collective Agreement
