Position Objectives:

Smoky Lake County is seeking a dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Custodian at the County’s Main Office in Smoky Lake, Alberta.

As the face of our facility’s upkeep, you will play a vital role in ensuring a professional, welcoming, and hygienic environment for both our staff and the public. We are looking for a dedicated professional who takes pride in their work and understands that a clean office is the foundation of a safe and productive workplace. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently and seeks a stable, long-term position within a supportive municipal environment.

Position Status: Permanent Part-Time, Unionized (CUPE Local 4575)

Reports to: Finance Manager

Hours of Work
• 6 hours per day, Monday to Friday (30 hours per week)
• Work is performed after regular office hours. The Main Office closes at 4:00 p.m.
• Typical hours are approximately 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., though start and end times may vary by a few hours based on operational requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean all accessible areas including offices, washrooms, kitchen/lunchroom, entranceways, and common areas
  • Dust, sweep, vacuum, mop, and sanitize surfaces and high-touch areas
  • Empty garbage and dispose of waste
  • Replenish washroom and cleaning supplies
  • Perform periodic and seasonal cleaning tasks
  • Conduct routine inspections and report maintenance concerns
  • Maintain custodial equipment and supply areas
  • Secure the building after hours, including locking doors, closing windows, and arming alarms
  • Follow all County safety policies and Alberta OH&S requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Knowledge of standard custodial cleaning methods and procedures
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to understand verbal instructions
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and perform repetitive tasks
  • Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of cleaning products
  • Reliability and attention to detail
  • Custodial or janitorial experience is an asset
  • High school diploma preferred but not required
  • Must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to employment

The wages and benefits for the position are based on the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4575 Collective Agreement.
