Information for Voters

Under new provincial legislation, all eligible voters who wish to vote in an Alberta Municipal Election must be listed on a Permanent Electors Register which will be maintained by each municipality. This process is new to Albertans, Smoky Lake County and its voters.

How Do I Register to Vote?

Registering in advance for the Smoky Lake County’s Permanent Electors Register will ensure your voting experience is fast, easy and as smooth as possible.

Smoky Lake County’s list of eligible voters comes from Voterlink (Elections Alberta). Make sure your information is accurate by registering, updating, or confirming your voter details through Voterlink to be included in Smoky Lake County's permanent Electors Register.

Didn't Register? No problem – You can still vote! You’ll be able to register or update your information right at your polling station during advance voting or on Election Day. 

Registered Voters

All registered voters are required to show valid government issued identification containing, at minimum, the voter's photograph and name.

If you are registered, it is recommended to use one of the following common types of identification:

• Alberta Driver Licence
• Alberta Identification Card
• Canadian Passport
• Canadian Citizenship Card
• Certificate of Indian Status Card
• First Nation Membership Card
• Métis Nation of Alberta Citizenship Card
• Métis Settlement Membership Card
• Canadian Forces ID Card
• Veterans Health Care ID Card
• CANPASS, FAST, or Nexus Card
• CATSA Identification Card
• Firearm Possession and Acquisition (PAL) Licence
• Alberta Service Dog ID Card

 

Non Registered Voters

On Voting Day, all non-registered voters are required to:

1. Complete a statement of elector eligibilty that they are eligible to vote.
2. Show valid government issued identification containing the voters photograph, name and current address. It is recommended to use one of the following common types of identification:

• Alberta Drivers Licence
• Alberta Identification Card
  
  

If You Do Not Have Photo ID That Validates Your Name and Current Address
If you are a non-registered voter unable to produce government issued photo identification that validates your name and current address or your address has recently changed, you will be required to provide one piece of Valid ID with your name and current address. It is recommended to use the following types of identification:  

• one piece of Valid Identification with your name, and
• Passport
• Alberta Health Care Card
• Military ID
• Metis Nation or Indian Status Card
• Employment ID
• Student ID
• Birth Certificate
• Social Insurance Card

• a second piece of Valid Identification that confirms your name and lists your current physical address. 
• When showing two pieces of ID, ensure that both contain your full name and that one piece shows your current physical address. Over 50 different types of identification can be presented to vote. Some examples include: 
• Bank Statement
• Mortgage Statement
• Residential Lease
• Utility Bill 
• Tax Assessment
• Income Tax Assessment

NOTE: Voters can use pieces of identification authorized by the Chief Electoral Officer under the Local Authorities Election Act. For the official list of valid identification, please visit the Elections Alberta ID Requirements website.

 

Advance Voting 

Advance polls will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

at    Smoky Lake County Council Chambers (at the Smoky Lake County Administration Office)

That Smoky Lake County Council approve two polling stations per division for the Municipal Elections on October 20th, 2025 with the voting boundaries as per the Local Authority Elections act Section 36 (1):
Division 1 -  Residents west of Range Road 130 will vote at the Vilna Cultural Center; East of Range Road 130 will vote at Spedden Hall
Division 2 - Residents west of Range Road 142 will vote at Dickie Bush; East of Range Road 142 will vote at Stry Hall
Division 3 - Residents west of Range Road 182 will vote at Warspite Community Hall; East of Range Road 182 will vote at Ukrainian National Hall (Smoky Lake)

The nomination period is now closed.

Smoky Lake County is required by the Local Authorities Election Act to maintain a register listing all individuals who have filed a Notice of Intent to Run in the upcoming general election. The register will be publicly available on the County's website until December 31, 2025.
